Planet Ocean as Medium and Culture

Planet Ocean as Medium and Culture
In times of climate change, Jürgen Claus looks back as an author and artist to the 1970s - and thus to his exploration of the oceans. At that time, he participated in expeditions led by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Hans Hass, as a result of which he created his first environmental art: sculptures and light installations on the ocean floor, videos of performances, and surrealist paintings inspired by the creatures of the sea. Claus manages to powerfully describe the experience of the 'planet ocean' through the access of other artists, such as Else Lasker- Schüler, Claude Debussy and Rainer Maria Rilke: Their integration creates a colorful tapestry of sound that attunes us to the infinite space of an 'oceanic feeling', while visionary marine architects (chapter 'Marine and Submarine Architecture') plan entire neighborhoods on the water and submarine worlds. What was still considered utopia in the 1950s is coming close to reality in times of megacities. The ocean with its inconceivable volume is an open space for imagination and invention; performance is the medium of movement, and waves are per se means of transmission and communication. So who is surprised that the last chapter proposes the planning of artificial islands with structures made of waste materials as a new habitat for areas threatened by flooding? The book is an invitation to leave the familiar paths and boldly take on new challenges.
